We have heard the instructions in flight before it takes off — “In case of emergency, place the oxygen mask first on yourself and then help others, this will only ensure proper help to others” and this is so relatable for our lives!

But where is Self Love? and if we know that it is absent then why do we not Practice Self Love?

Is Social Media Self Love real?

It seems everywhere you look from Instagram, magazines to movies you will definitely see someone talking about Self Love or using a hashtag on their pedicure picture #selflovesaturday!

There are some standards and norms set by social media about Self Love but it is more than wearing a face mask, going to the parlour, wearing expensive outfits, or going to the gym for that matter. By the end of this blog, I think we will agree.

Self -love is an umbrella term for different acts of love we perform towards ourselves and with our own will. It includes concepts like Self Care, Self Awareness & Self Worth.

If anyone of it is missing then you do not entirely have Self Love.

The journey of Self Love can be a bit tough for our generation because today we set goals and boundaries in life according to What is popular or What will be acceptable and seek validation from others at every step.

It is the reason most of us lack it because No one wants to sit down, Take a break, and have a conversation with themselves.

6 Simple Ways to Practice Self Love

I think we now have an idea of what Self Love is but starting your own practice of Self Love and reconnecting with yourself in a caring and kind way can be one of the tasks that seem so huge and we do not have any idea where to start.

So to help you get started, here are some simple things you can do to practice self-love :

1. Positive Self Talk

We all have internal dialogue- whether we are aware of it or not.

If we make a mistake many of us will immediately say “How stupid of you to do that” and tell ourselves “how useless, disorganized you are” and “you cannot do anything”. But how often do we praise ourselves when we do something good? Or tell it is okay if a mistake happens?

To practice Self Love it is important we must reframe the way we speak to ourselves because it affects our mood, emotions, and ultimately our actions. Some of the examples to reframe your negative thoughts are :

  • if you wanted to say “ I Failed and I embarrassed myself” Say “ I am proud I even tried, that took courage”
  • if you wanted to say “There is no way I can make this work” Say “ I can do this and I will try my best”
  • if you wanted to say “ I made a mistake” Say “ I can learn from this”

2. Make a TO FEEL List instead of TO DO List

Your daily task and reminders should be more than just deadlines, assignments, upcoming meetings instead more about what you have to feel today.

Something like to feel happy today, to be confident today, to be calmer today, and to feel alive today!

3. Detox from Technology and Work Before Bed

Exposure to screen light can stop you from getting a good night rest. Detox will make you feel more alive and focused in the morning as well boosting your creativity the next day!

4. Tidy Up your Room

A clean bedroom will make you happier as you will be living in a more peaceful and ordered place. Making your bed, cleaning your workplace and wardrobe create a feeling of accomplishment and positivity.

5. Start your Day with Something you Enjoy

Having a little me time to look forward to will give you satisfaction and help you avoid negative thoughts in the day.

It can be something small like watering plants, moving your body for 30minutes, enjoying mindful breakfast, or making a to feel list for the day.

6. Mirror Mirror on the Wall

See yourself every day in the mirror and admire yourself. Repeat these affirmations at least 5 times a day and see how your words can heal you :

  • I love and accept the way you are
  • I am worthy of my own time
  • All my feelings are valid
  • The universe wants and needs me

I hope these suggestions will help you on your journey of self-love because it does not happen overnight.

Every day you are learning and growing but what is important is that we have to be our own best friend and have to treat ourselves with the same patience and kindness we would expect from others.

So take time out of your work, college, school, and life.

BE TORTOISE OF YOUR RACE, TAKE IT SLOW, HIBERNATE FOR A WHILE, MAKE YOURSELF HOT CHOCOLATE, RE-WATCH YOUR FAVOURITE MOVE, WORK ON YOUR GOALS AND NEVER STOP LOVING YOURSELF.
